History
Andy Williams (1927-2012) was an American singer who became one of the defining voices of easy listening in the 1960s. Born Howard Andrew Williams in Wall Lake, Iowa, he started performing as a child with his three brothers in the Williams Brothers vocal group, later backing Kay Thompson's Las Vegas nightclub act before going solo. His break came as a regular on Steve Allen's Tonight show, which led to a recording contract and hits like "Canadian Sunset" and "Butterfly" in the mid-1950s. He is best known for his 1962 recording of "Moon River," which became his signature song even though it was never released as a single. From 1957 to 1971, he hosted The Andy Williams Show, a variety program that won three Emmys and gave The Osmond Brothers, including a young Donny Osmond, their first national exposure in the early 1960s. Williams later hosted the televised Grammy Awards for seven straight years starting in 1971. He earned 18 gold and three platinum albums over his career.
