History
Ancient Methods is the Berlin project of Michael Wollenhaupt, known for fusing hard, industrial techno with the physical energy of EBM and a strong streak of religious and historical imagery. The project began in the late 2000s as a duo and later continued with Wollenhaupt alone. Its early output came as a numbered series of records on its own label, pressed on vinyl and aimed squarely at DJs, which quickly made the name familiar in the darker end of European techno. The sound is built from pounding, distorted kicks, metallic percussion, noise and snippets of choral or orchestral material that give tracks a ceremonial, almost liturgical weight. Releases such as Seventh Seal and Turn Ice Realities Into Fire Dreams, and the later album The Jericho Records, show how the project reaches for grand themes without losing its dance-floor function. Ancient Methods helped shape the industrial techno revival of the 2010s. Listeners recognise it by the brutal, saturated rhythm section set against dramatic, sacred-sounding samples, like a warehouse party held in a cathedral.
