History
Amon Amarth play melodic death metal at the pace of a marching column rather than a blast beat. The Swedish band formed in the Stockholm area and settled early on the sound they still use: twin guitars harmonising in thirds over mid-tempo riffs, a growl pitched low enough to be felt rather than parsed, and drums that gallop instead of racing. The subject matter has been Norse mythology and Viking history from the beginning, handled as narrative rather than costume, with songs written as episodes: a raid, a burial, the death of a god. That consistency is a large part of why they became a festival band. The live show grew into staged theatre with longships and helmets, and a crowd answers Raise Your Horns the way a football terrace answers a chant. Twilight of the Thunder God is the track most often used to introduce them, and albums including Jomsviking and Berserker reached the upper part of the American chart, which is unusual for a death metal act singing about the ninth century.
