History
Alpha Wolf play metalcore that leans hard on nu metal: down-tuned, bouncing riffs, abrupt stops, beatdown breakdowns and harsh vocals that swing between screams and rhythmic, almost rapped delivery. The band formed in 2013 in Burnie, Tasmania, and later settled in Melbourne. Their debut album Mono arrived in 2017; the title, short for monochromatic, pointed to lyrics dealing with trauma and depression. The second album, A Quiet Place to Die, released in 2020, became their commercial peak in Australia, and Half Living Things continued in the same direction. Alongside acts that revived the nu metal influence inside heavy music, Alpha Wolf became one of the more visible Australian names in that movement. A listener recognises them by the dissonant, lurching guitar tone, sudden silences before a drop and the cold, bleak atmosphere that runs through the heaviest passages.
