History

All Time Low have spent a career on one problem: how to write a pop-punk chorus that still works when the band is no longer twenty. They formed in the Baltimore suburbs while still at school and made their name on bright, fast guitar pop with lyrics that treat heartbreak as a joke told at their own expense. "Dear Maria, Count Me In" is the template, a verse that barely pauses before the hook, a vocal placed high in the range and double tracked, a chorus written to be shouted back from the floor. "Weightless" did the same with a bigger production. The band survived the collapse of that scene by narrowing rather than reinventing: cleaner guitars, more pop structure, the same voice. "Monsters" proved it, a darker mid-tempo track that held the top of American alternative radio for months. What identifies them is the phrasing, syllables crammed against the bar line, and the habit of dropping the band out for the last line of a chorus.
