History

Alien Sex Fiend made deathrock that was more cartoon nightmare than gothic romance: pounding drum machines, looping electronics, scratchy guitars and Nik Fiend's manic, half-sung, half-ranted vocals, all wrapped in horror-film camp and heavy stage makeup. The group formed in London in the early 1980s around Nik Fiend and Mrs Fiend and became closely linked with the Batcave, the Soho club night that served as a hub for the early British goth and deathrock scene. Their debut album, Who's Been Sleeping in My Brain?, came out in 1983 and set the style: repetitive, trance-like grooves, absurd humour and a sense of creeping psychedelia. Acid Bath in 1984 and Maximum Security in 1985 pushed further into electronics and relentless rhythm, and the band's reliance on machines set them apart from the guitar-led goth acts around them. They kept recording for decades, drifting toward industrial and electronic sounds. Listeners recognise Alien Sex Fiend by the hypnotic, machine-driven pulse, by Nik Fiend's unhinged voice and by a sense of humour that never takes the darkness too seriously.
