History

Alicia Keys arrived as a pianist first, and the piano is still what identifies a record as hers. She was trained on classical repertoire in New York and brought its left hand into soul: "Fallin'" opens on a minor key figure that could be a keyboard exercise and turns into a gospel cadence, with a vocal that slides between the blues note and the clean one on purpose. That single and the album around it took five Grammys in 2002 and set the terms for the neo-soul that followed onto mainstream radio. "If I Ain't Got You" shows the phrasing best, unhurried, behind the beat, with the melisma rationed. "No One" went the other way, a stacked and insistent chorus built for volume. Her records keep live drums and real keys where her contemporaries moved to programming, and there is a slight rasp at the top of her range that she has never polished out. Her later work moved toward sparer arrangements and toward writing for other singers, but the voice and the keyboard remain the core of it.
