History

Alyona Apina sings the kind of Russian pop that keeps one foot in the courtyard song: plain verse and chorus, a story with names and places in it, and a light, deliberately girlish timbre that stays close to speech. She came from Saratov and first reached a national audience as a soloist in Kombinatsiya, the group that set the sound of early 1990s Russian girl pop, all cheap synthesisers and jokes told with a straight face. Her solo records kept the format and sharpened the writing. "Elektrichka" is the one most people name, a commuter train scene folded into a refrain; "Uzelki" and "Ksyusha" work the same everyday material, sung without irony. The arrangements are spare by design: drum machine, one keyboard hook, a lot of room left for the vocal. What a listener recognises is the diction. She sings Russian the way Russian is spoken, and the songs stay in the memory because of it. Her stage manner belongs to the same plain register, direct and free of glamour.
