History
Big-voiced romantic ballads made Alexander Serov a household name in the last Soviet years. Born in 1954 in Kherson, he had worked the estrada circuit for a long while before «Мадонна» appeared in 1987 and put him into every television concert of the season. The repertoire that carried him came largely from composer Igor Nikolaev, who wrote both «Мадонна» and «Ты меня любишь» for a dramatic tenor with a thick chest register and a habit of holding the last note longer than the arrangement asks. Around that voice sits late-Soviet studio pop: banked synthesiser strings, slow ballad tempo, a modulation before the final chorus. Serov sang it standing almost still and let volume do the work that choreography did for younger acts. The formula dated fast once the 1990s arrived, but for two or three years it set what a romantic hit sounded like on Soviet screens, and he has toured that repertoire for decades since.
