History

A Leningrad medical graduate who rode ambulance shifts before he rode tour buses, Alexander Rozenbaum (born 1951) built his name on tape rather than on radio. The Odessa cycle, written and recorded around the turn of the 1980s, invented a whole imagined city: pre-revolutionary thieves, harbour slang, klezmer inflections under a twelve-string guitar. «Гоп-стоп» became the best known piece of it and is still the song strangers shout at him. His delivery is a rasping baritone that sits close to speech, with the guitar doing the arranging: open-string drones, quick minor turns, almost no band behind it on the early recordings. «Вальс-бостон» showed the other half of the catalogue, a slow waltz sung straight, with no character mask on. Songs about the Afghan war, «Чёрный тюльпан» among them, followed later in the decade. By then the official stage had caught up with what magnitizdat cassettes had been spreading for years, and he moved from kitchen recordings into concert halls without changing the instrument in his hands.
