History

Alexander Gorodnitsky wrote his first songs while working as a geologist and later as an oceanographer, on expeditions in the far north and at sea, and the biography is audible in the material. The subjects are distance, cold, ships, the long return, and the tone is level rather than sentimental: he states things and lets the listener supply the feeling. Musically the songs are as plain as the form allows, a guitar, a steady strum, a melody built for a tired voice around a fire, which is exactly how they spread through the amateur song clubs of the 1960s. "Atlanty" stands slightly apart, a song about the stone figures holding up a portico in Leningrad that turned into an unofficial anthem for the city and is still sung there. "Na materik" and "Sneg" belong to the expedition songs proper. He is one of the founding figures of the Russian authored song and one of the few who never stopped being a working scientist.
