History
Akercocke combined blackened death metal with progressive ambition, and presented it in tailored suits rather than leather and spikes. The band came out of London in the late 1990s, led by the vocalist and guitarist Jason Mendonça, and quickly stood out in the British extreme scene for their Satanic, erotic and occult themes, delivered with a dandyish, theatrical elegance. Musically they moved between blast-beat fury, guttural growls and black metal shrieks on one side and clean singing, atmospheric passages, jazzy detours and electronic interludes on the other, often within a single song. Choronzon, released in 2003, and Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone in 2005 are usually seen as their strongest records, dense and unpredictable but carefully structured. The band went quiet in the early 2010s and returned with Renaissance in Extremis in 2017, which leaned further into progressive writing and melody. A listener recognises Akercocke by the sudden swings between brutality and calm, the contrast of harsh and clean voices, intricate riffing and a dark, ceremonial, faintly decadent atmosphere.
