History
Born Anna Marie Wooldridge in Chicago in 1930, she started out singing in supper clubs under a stage name someone else picked for her, and spent the rest of her career dismantling that role. That's Him! (1957) put her in front of Max Roach, Sonny Rollins and Kenny Dorham. Three years later came We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite, where the Triptych section moves her from prayer to wordless screaming and back with only Roach's drums underneath. Straight Ahead followed in 1961. She married Roach in 1962 and they divorced in 1970; recording work thinned out across much of that decade while she acted, including a lead in Nothing But a Man (1964). A second career opened in the 1990s on Verve, built largely on songs she wrote herself and on phrasing that sits close to speech, stretching and cracking a word rather than smoothing it. She died in 2010.
