History

A Winged Victory for the Sullen make slow, luminous music from piano, strings and long drones, pieces that seem to hang in the air rather than move forward. The project is a duo of pianist and composer Dustin O'Halloran and Adam Wiltzie, one half of the drone group Stars of the Lid, and their sound sits exactly where those two backgrounds meet: O'Halloran's spare, melodic piano writing set inside Wiltzie's sustained guitar and tape textures. The self-titled debut from 2011 used a small string section and grand piano, recorded with a lot of room around the instruments, so that decays and resonances become part of the music. "Atomos" grew out of a commission to score a contemporary dance piece for choreographer Wayne McGregor and pushed the palette wider, with more electronics and deeper low end. Their work sits alongside the neoclassical and ambient scenes of labels like Erased Tapes and Kranky rather than in concert halls. The recognisable traits are patience and warmth: chords held until they almost dissolve, strings swelling over quiet drones, melodies that appear only briefly.
