History

A Man Called Adam are the British duo of Sally Rodgers and Steve Jones, whose records sit where acid jazz, Balearic house and chill-out overlap. They surfaced in the late 1980s, with a first single in 1988, and their early releases came out on Acid Jazz Records, which placed them in the London scene that was mixing jazz, soul and the new house music. Barefoot in the Head in 1990 became their signature track, a slow, sun-warmed groove with a hazy, dreamlike vocal that outlived its modest UK chart placing to become a staple of Balearic sets. The debut album The Apple followed in 1991, and the pair also ran their own label, Other Records. Through the mid-1990s their music turned up on the Café del Mar compilations, which fixed them in the sound of Ibiza sunsets, and Duende in 1998 continued in that vein. After a long pause and side work in sound design, they returned with Farmarama in 2019. Their records are easy to spot: unhurried tempos, live-sounding bass and percussion, soft Latin and jazz colours and a warm, slightly melancholic atmosphere.
