History

9th Wonder is known for chopped soul samples, warm Rhodes and vocal snippets, and drums that knock without crowding the voice. He came out of North Carolina and first drew attention as the producer of Little Brother, the trio he formed with the rappers Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh. The Listening (2003) made their name in underground circles, and much of its sound was built on software rather than expensive studio gear, which inspired a generation of bedroom producers. His profile rose fast after he produced Threat for Jay-Z's The Black Album, and he went on to work with major R&B and rap artists while keeping a strong solo catalogue, including the Dream Merchant compilations. He later ran the label Jamla, whose roster, heard on Jamla Is the Squad (2014), included Rapsody. He has also taught hip-hop history at the university level. His beats are recognisable by their sped-up soul voices, crisp snares and the sense of an old record gently looped into a new song.
