History

2Baba sings in a warm, slightly grainy tenor that sits somewhere between highlife, reggae and American soul, and that blend is most of the reason Nigerian pop travelled the way it did. African Queen is the song that carried it. A slow, unhurried love song with a guitar line anyone can hum, it moved past Lagos into the rest of West Africa, then into the diaspora and onto Western screens, and it showed a generation of Nigerian artists that a local record could be heard abroad without being rewritten for abroad. His phrasing mixes English and pidgin freely, which keeps the songs conversational rather than polished, and he tends to favour melody over rhythm in a scene that usually does the opposite. Later work turned to social commentary without losing the softness of the delivery. Anyone tracing the line from the highlife era to the afrobeats wave of the 2010s passes through him. Implication and Holy Holy show how little he needed to change the formula for it to keep working.
