History

2814 is the collaborative project of vaporwave producers HKE and t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者, and it moved the genre away from irony toward something slow, wet and cinematic. Where early vaporwave chopped up mall music and corporate jingles, 2814 built long ambient pieces out of rain, distant traffic, submerged melodies and heavily reverbed synth pads, closer to a night-time city scene from a science-fiction film than to a shopping centre. The 2015 album 新しい日の誕生 (Birth of a New Day) became one of the most widely shared records of that turn, and its tracks are often cited when listeners talk about the dreamy, atmospheric side of the genre sometimes called dreampunk. Rain Temple (2017) continued in the same direction, with even more space between events and a sense of drifting through a neon-lit city after hours. The pieces rarely have beats in any dance sense; they rely on texture, slowed vocal fragments and a patient pace. The duo's work helped show that vaporwave could hold real atmosphere rather than only commentary.
